It's a great soil improvement method and a great way to cover the ground without using grass (which I have to weedwhack!) You layer green materials, green leaves, fresh branches, grass clipping etc on the dirt, then you cover this with a layer of cardboard. You water the cardboard with a hose to get it damp and then you put a layer of the brown gold (cow poo) down. Water again and then cover the whole thing with dry leaves and sawdust.
This has been Tess' little project and it's coming on really nicely. We had a family Friday last week and we had another morning this week doing a section under some trees that rarely gets any grass growing there anyway.
We had some of our lovely helpers from the local high school helping out with the process today, Yiraldi and Adrion and I have to say, they got stuck in there really well... I thought there might be a slight complaint when I said, "so now let's go get some poo!" but no, they looked at me like I was a bit weird but, love 'em, they just went with it.
Here are some pics of the action today.
Much love from the garden on the golden rock... (not the brown kind)
adding the final layer of leaves.
Tess making sure it's all even.
After the leaves, the final layer is sawdust. The boys showing off their handi-work.
