We have nicknamed our boys the veggie patch kids because this is one area of focus for them. Each week they come up to the garden for one or two mornings and they work with us, they spend time doing different jobs and they also spend a little time tending the vegetable patch and looking after their seedlings.
They planted a whole host of things early on and now they are all at planting out stage. Yesterday they planted out the cucumbers but they have a lot going on, here is what we currently have planted... 3 varieties of beans, black beans, black eyed peas and French beans, we have butternut squash, yellow squash, radish, beetroot, courgettes (zuchinis for all you Americans) as well as 2 varieties of melons, cantaloupe and honeydew! We also have tubs with leaf lettuce, rocket (arugula), mustard greens, herbs and we planted spring onions, corn and tomato seeds this week. They have a lot of work on their hands!
It's really great though because as they work they are learning how to take care of the plants, how to run a food garden and what to do with the food they grow. For example they tasted the rocket that's growing and we talked about how they could add it to salads to give them more flavour. They are learning all kinds of sustainable practices as well and of course they get to enjoy the spoils of their hard work when they are grown.
Wilbert also discovered the joy of weedwhacking. He whacked the whole car-park and I think he has found his calling. It was perfect! Like... totally perfect, no little divits in the ground, the grass was all cut to the same length... perfect! He loves our weedwhackers as well and enjoyed it so much he wants to come back on Thursday and carry on.... (yay!)

Much love from the garden on the golden rock... and the veggie patch kids.
