Dagmar is leaving next week and heading back to her other home in Austria for the summer, (she is like a Monarch Butterfly she heads south when it gets cold). She comes to Statia every year to escape the cold of the deep dark European winter and get her Vitamin-D top-up in the sun.
We always miss her when she’s gone and look forward to her return. She comes every week to help us out and works in the shadehouse looking after all our little plant-babies, potting on, propagating and generally doing her thing. She gets a huge amount of work done in the few hours that she spends here each week and she is a great source of information on propagation and plant care in the tropics. I am certainly very grateful to have had her here over the last few years to help teach me some useful techniques when it comes to the tropical plants.
This year she has been helping with our big propagation projects, Usona reforestation propagation, native plants and a big plant order we have for a new garden as well as the usual, “Dagmar I need 20 crotons for the plant sale” “Dagmar can you get this to root” “Dagmar how do propagate this?” etc.
It was also lucky that she was here in November when her Majesty came to visit. Dagmar has been working at the garden since it was created back in 1999 and together with the Statia Morning Glory Club planted many of the first trees and shrubs we had here. It was great to be able to introduce her to the queen and have her share some of her experiences with her.
Dagmar is a real star, we are lucky to have her and we love and appreciate her very much… we will miss you this summer Dagmar… hurry back!!!
Much love from the garden on the golden rock.
