Plants obviously need rain… but they don’t need THIS much rain! It rained so hard at the weekend here that dirt, rocks and mud blocked some of the roads. I was not on the island, I was in St Kitts and we had lovely sunshine! By the time I got home on Sunday evening they had cleared the blockages but there is still dirt all over the place. The issue is the weedwhackers aren’t working at the moment I can’t cut the grass and all this lovely precipitation is doing nothing to help the soon to be knee-high situation! Never fear though, Nadio is on the case!
So, I am in the office again today as it’s still distinctly damp outside and I don’t want to prune up! It is a good thing I guess, I am getting all the office jobs I have been putting off for the last few months done and I am finally getting around to doing my leaf signs. I am putting new ID signs up in the garden and they are all in the shape of a leaf with the plant names, origins and details on it, things like if it’s poisonous, medicinal, climbing, edible all that kind of stuff… they are looking really cute.
We are now starting to come into tourist season and we are getting more and more visitors every day so having good signage is important. Some of these plants are very unfamiliar to visitors from North America and Europe and having a little information about what they are looking at is nice.
In other news, I have 2 new interns. Alexie (from Canada ) arrived a couple of weeks ago now and is settling in very well. She has taken on one of the exhibitions as her personal project and is already motoring ahead with it. We are planning a go-green expo and Alexie is perfect to organize the whole thing, she is a total eco-warrior chick! We will launch in the new year so we can encourage people to be more eco-friendly as their new years resolution. There will be different events and games to play to work out your carbon footprint and we will have plant give-a-ways and all sorts of other stuff alongside.
Sadie is my other new intern, from the UK . She is only flying in tonight… what lovely weather to arrive to eh? Come on Statia give us some sunshine!!
As always, much love from the garden on the golden rock…
