She didn't do too much damage to us thankfully, a few tree branches down and lots of leaves and debris blown all over the garden. It only took us the morning on Monday to clear most of the mess up and tidy up the trees that had lost some limbs. Nadio came out with the chainsaw and cut down the Yucca that had fallen over onto the car park on Tuesday and by the end of the day you wouldn't know anything had happened. The worst part of the clearance was nearly falling in the pond multiple times trying to fish out all the bits of cactus that had fallen in. One of the large Cochineal cactus we have fell over into the pond. Thanks, yeah, it couldn't have fell another 2 feet to the side and missed, smack in the middle of the pond. So there I am, leaning over into the pond, ankle deep trying to haul it out. We did get lots of the young pads which apparently you can eat. Sam (Intern and Botan chef) has been doing some experiments. They don't taste of much but are good fillers for stews and stir-fries.
The rest of the week was preparing for the monthly meat sale, this time we made juice, bush tea and Neem spray for the plants, we bagged up lots of herbs for sale and I spent several hours with a machete chopping up coconuts. The coconut water we sold was a big hit, it sold out and people were asking for more. That's great news but it just means next time I'm going to have to cut up twice as many!
I will post some pictures for you next week, we have been busy in the medicinal garden which is growing like mad thanks to all the rain we have been having and Anja took some pictures so I can show you the progression.
Lastly, happy birthday to my Mum for yesterday. She was the person that got me interested in gardening in the first place and so I owe her a lot because now I get to do something I love and get paid for it! Love you Mum!
Much love from the garden on the golden rock...
